Asparagus brings an incomparable feeling of spring!
Did you know? The culture of asparagus was already known in ancient Egypt. In Belgium, the growing of asparagus started in the 19th century. In our country, the sandy soil regions (mainly in Limburg) are the main suppliers of this “white gold”. Traditionally, the Belgian asparagus season starts on the third Thursday of April and lasts until the end of June. Here, we talk of open-air vegetable growing. Greenhouse asparagus is often available as early as March.
White wines made from Chenin, Viognier, Pinot Gris and Muscat grapes match perfectly with white asparagus. Perhaps you will like the Vouvray from the house Pinon (Loire), the Viognier Zoé Parcé (Pays d’Oc), the Pinot Gris Villa Rubini (Italy) or the Jasmin Firriato (Sicily) ?
A rich Chardonnay wine such as Oropasso (Italy) is also a nice combination with asparagus and “hollandaise” sauce.
